Job Description

To liaise with agricultural extension officers and coordinate procurement, a farming enterprise in Brits, North West is seeking a Research Unit Lead.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate procurement of seeds, fertilisers, chemicals, animal feed, and other agricultural inputs, ensuring timely and cost-effective purchasing.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive crop rotation plans and soil fertility programmes to maintain long-term soil health and sustainable yields.
  • Manage and supervise a team of farm workers, allocating tasks, providing training on procedures, and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations.
  • Prepare budgets and financial forecasts for farming operations, track actual expenditure against projections, and report variances to senior management.
  • Oversee all daily farm operations including planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, and post-harvest handling of crops for maximum productivity.
  • Liaise with agricultural extension officers, veterinarians, agronomists, and other specialists to access technical expertise and stay current with industry developments.
  • Monitor the health and growth of crops or livestock daily, identifying signs of disease, nutrient deficiency, or pest infestation and taking corrective action.
Requirements
  • Physical fitness and stamina to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions during peak farming seasons.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills with ability to motivate and direct a diverse team of farm workers effectively.
  • A minimum of three to five years of practical farming experience in a commercial agricultural environment with demonstrable results.
  • A valid driver's licence is essential; a heavy vehicle or tractor licence will be considered an advantage.
  • A degree or diploma in agriculture, agronomy, animal science, horticulture, or a related field from a recognised agricultural college or university.
  • In-depth knowledge of crop production techniques, soil science, pest management, and modern farming practices relevant to South African conditions.
