Agronomist

The Agronomist will liaise with agricultural extension officers, manage and supervise a team of farm workers and develop and implement comprehensive crop rotation plans and soil fertility.

The role is based in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal. Open communication and a solutions-focused attitude are highly valued. The team operates with a hands-on, get-it-done attitude and good camaraderie. If you tick the boxes below, we want to hear from you.

• Develop and implement comprehensive crop rotation plans and soil fertility programmes to maintain long-term soil health and sustainable yields.
• Coordinate procurement of seeds, fertilisers, chemicals, animal feed, and other agricultural inputs, ensuring timely and cost-effective purchasing.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant agricultural legislation, food safety standards, and environmental regulations applicable to farming operations.
• Maintain detailed records of all farming activities including input usage, production volumes, weather data, and equipment maintenance logs.
• Monitor the health and growth of crops or livestock daily, identifying signs of disease, nutrient deficiency, or pest infestation and taking corrective action.

• In-depth knowledge of crop production techniques, soil science, pest management, and modern farming practices relevant to South African conditions.
• A degree or diploma in agriculture, agronomy, animal science, horticulture, or a related field from a recognised agricultural college or university.
• A valid driver's licence is essential; a heavy vehicle or tractor licence will be considered an advantage.
• Proficiency in using farm management software and Microsoft Office applications for record-keeping and reporting purposes.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions quickly in response to changing weather or operational conditions.
• Physical fitness and stamina to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions during peak farming seasons.
• Strong leadership and people management skills with ability to motivate and direct a diverse team of farm workers effectively.
