Horticulturist

The Horticulturist will prepare budgets and financial forecasts for farming operations, ensure compliance with all relevant agricultural legislation and operate and oversee maintenance of farm machinery.

The position is located in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. Skills development and on-the-job learning are a genuine part of the role. The team looks after its own and expects the same in return. • Prepare budgets and financial forecasts for farming operations, track actual expenditure against projections, and report variances to senior management.
• Liaise with agricultural extension officers, veterinarians, agronomists, and other specialists to access technical expertise and stay current with industry developments.
• Oversee all daily farm operations including planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, and post-harvest handling of crops for maximum productivity.
• Maintain detailed records of all farming activities including input usage, production volumes, weather data, and equipment maintenance logs.
• Monitor the health and growth of crops or livestock daily, identifying signs of disease, nutrient deficiency, or pest infestation and taking corrective action.
• Manage and supervise a team of farm workers, allocating tasks, providing training on procedures, and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations.

• A valid driver's licence is essential; a heavy vehicle or tractor licence will be considered an advantage.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions quickly in response to changing weather or operational conditions.
• In-depth knowledge of crop production techniques, soil science, pest management, and modern farming practices relevant to South African conditions.
• Strong leadership and people management skills with ability to motivate and direct a diverse team of farm workers effectively.
• Proficiency in using farm management software and Microsoft Office applications for record-keeping and reporting purposes.
