The purpose of this Quantity Surveyor role is to manage procurement and delivery of construction materials and oversee commissioning and handover of completed works.

Responsibilities

Site Management & Supervision

  • Conduct daily site inspections to verify that all work conforms to engineering drawings, architectural specifications, and approved method statements, identifying and documenting any deviations or non-conformances for rectification within agreed timeframes.
  • Manage and coordinate all on-site construction activities including setting out, earthworks, concrete pours, steel fixing, bricklaying, and finishing trades, ensuring every phase progresses according to the approved programme and quality benchmarks.
  • Manage the delivery, storage, and distribution of construction materials to site including aggregates, cement, reinforcing steel, and formwork, ensuring correct quantities and specifications arrive on time to avoid costly programme delays.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all plant, machinery, and equipment on site is inspected daily by competent operators, that inspection checklists are completed diligently, and that any defective equipment is immediately tagged out of service and removed from the work area.
  • Investigate all incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts thoroughly by conducting root cause analysis, implementing preventative measures, and preparing detailed investigation reports for the construction manager, client representative, and regulatory authorities.

Project Coordination & Planning

  • Manage procurement scheduling and material take-offs from approved drawings and bills of quantities, raising requisitions timeously to ensure materials are available when needed without disrupting the construction programme or causing idle labour.
  • Liaise with architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, and MEP consultants to resolve design queries, request technical clarifications, process variation orders, and coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces seamlessly on site.
  • Develop and maintain detailed construction programmes using project management software such as Microsoft Project, identifying critical path activities, resource requirements, and key milestones to guide weekly work planning and resource allocation.
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports to the project manager and client, documenting achievements, resource utilisation, weather delays, and any emerging issues impacting schedule or budget performance.
Requirements
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities when dealing with unforeseen site conditions or technical challenges.
  • For artisan roles, a recognised trade certificate in bricklaying, carpentry, or plumbing issued by a relevant training authority.
  • A minimum of five years of construction industry experience with at least two years in a supervisory or management role.
  • A valid driver's licence and own reliable transport to travel between the office and construction sites as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations, with SACPCMP registration where required.
