Job Description

Hands-on from day one, the Shift Boss will coordinate emergency response procedures, collect, log, and transport geological samples to the laboratory, maintaining chain and supervise mining crew activities for a resources company in Alberton, Gauteng.

The operation runs structured shift rosters in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act, and adherence to all safety protocols is non-negotiable.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor ventilation, ground conditions, and environmental factors continuously to ensure a safe underground working environment.
  • Supervise mining crew activities to ensure production is carried out according to the mining plan within approved safety parameters.
  • Operate mining equipment such as drill rigs, continuous miners, roof bolters, and loaders safely per operating procedures.
  • Coordinate emergency response procedures including fire drills, evacuation exercises, and first aid response for mine emergency preparedness.
  • Ensure all mining activities comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act and the company's safety policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • For supervisory roles, a Mine Overseer's Certificate of Competency or Shift Boss Certificate from the relevant mining authority.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act and relevant regulations governing mining operations in South Africa.
  • For geology roles, a bachelor's degree in geology or geoscience and experience with geological modelling and sampling software.
  • A minimum of three to five years of experience in the mining industry with specific experience in the relevant mining method.
  • A commitment to safety and the ability to work according to strict procedures and protocols without taking shortcuts.
  • For blasting roles, a valid blasting certificate and experience in handling and use of explosives in a mining environment.
  • A Grade 12 certificate is the minimum; a relevant mining qualification or blasting certificate is essential for technical roles.
