Job Description

Reporting to the relevant manager, the Junior Welder will perform welding operations using MIG and inspect all welds visually at a manufacturing company in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.

The role is based on a production floor where quality control and throughput targets are central.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect all welds visually for defects including porosity, undercut, overlap, incomplete fusion, and cracks, and grind out and repair any defective welds.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area by removing slag, offcuts, and waste materials, and ensuring gas cylinders are stored and secured properly.
  • Set up and adjust welding equipment including amperage, voltage, gas flow, and wire feed speed for different materials and joint configurations.
  • Prepare materials for welding by cutting, grinding, bevelling, and cleaning joint surfaces to ensure proper fusion and weld quality.
  • Adhere strictly to all occupational health and safety regulations and wear required PPE including welding helmet, gloves, safety boots, and protective clothing.
  • Weld components in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions to required quality standards and dimensional tolerances.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to determine joint preparation, filler material, and welding sequence.
Requirements
  • Proficiency in one or more welding processes including MIG, TIG, ARC, or CO2 welding on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium.
  • A valid welder qualification certificate for the relevant process and material thickness in accordance with ISO 9606 or ASME IX.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, welding symbols, and fabrication specifications accurately.
  • A minimum of two to five years of practical welding experience in a workshop, construction, or industrial environment.
  • A valid driver's licence is preferred for roles requiring travel to multiple sites.
  • Physical fitness to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in outdoor conditions on construction sites.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds that meet inspection standards.
